2018 GMC Terrain
The 2018 GMC Terrain and our initial impressions. Most vehicles are sold in North America and Saudi Arabia.
This premium crossover is all-new inside and out and about 350 pounds lighter than the outgoing model.
Outside: Bold new design for GMC, HID headlamps, more muscular hood, LED tail lamps, available 19″ wheels.
Engines: 3 options -Two turbo gasoline engines are available.
1.5L – 170 hp / 201 lb-ft of torque (26/30/28 mpg)
2.0L – 252 hp / 260 lb-ft torque (22/28/24 mpg).
1.6L turbo diesel – 137 hp / 240 torque (28/39/32 mpg)
The gas engines are mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission while the diesel is matched to a 6-speed auto. All are equipped with start/stop. Front and all-wheel drive is also available. Electronic precision push button and trigger shifting (no shift lever).
We were impressed with all three. The diesel provides better torque and fuel economy numbers but if you don’t want to pay the premium for it, the gas engines are more than adequate for the Terrain.
AWD with traction select: 2WD, off-road, AWD and towing.
Ride: The new stiffer body, improves the ride and handling.
Inside: New 7″ infotainment screen with crisper, sharper graphics. More advanced infotainment system. Standard Apple CAr Play and Android Auto. Available navigation. Functional storage in passenger side dash, real aluminum trim, more storage under the console. Steering wheel paddles for infotainment. Standard OnStar as expected.
Standard fold flat front passenger seat can accommodate items up to 8 feet in length. Denali – hands free lift gate.
Safety: available Surround Vision, automatic Parking Assist, Rear park assist, rear cross traffic alert, rear camera, Forward collision warning, side blind zone alert and lane change, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, following distance indicator, front park assist, low-speed forward automatic braking and safety alert seat for child seats.
Pro: love the new Diesel engine, new styling and upgrades
Con: The unique electronic gear selector, that takes a little getting used to, it really helps open up the center console area. Adjustable height seatbelts. Turning radius is unacceptable.
Overall its smaller, lighter, better MPGs and maneuverability.
The 2018 GMC Terrain is on sale now, with the base model carrying a starting price just under $26,000. SLT at $32,295. While the top of the line Denali versions start just over $38,000.
