2017 Mazda MX-5 RF

2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF (“Retractable Fastback”) is the second member of the current generation of Miata roadster, which was redesigned last year. The Miata RF’s entire roof doesn’t hide in the trunk, the overhead roof panel and rear window retract under the back panel. The Miata RF’s roof stows at the touch of a button in about 13 seconds and can be operated at speeds up to 6 mph.

Prices start at: $31,555. Available as a Club model with 17” wheels and Bilstein Shocks or the Grand Touring model that offers Mazda Connect Infortainment system and leather trimmed seats.

Power by a 2L engine with 155 hp and earns 35 mpg. Our test vehicle earned 36mpg with a mix of highway and city streets.

One major perk about the MX-5 RF is its six-speed manual transmission. It’s small and light, yet retains the short-throw precision drivers love. So whether you’re cruising down a curvy road or dashing down a straightaway, the MX-5 RF’s transmission will ensure an effortless and enjoyable drive. An automatic transmission is also available.

The aluminum power plant frame has undergone a weight loss of nearly 20 percent from the previous-generation MX-5. That means a more connected, responsive driving experience – every time you get behind the wheel.
Together, the RF’s balance and rigid chassis create an incredibly responsive drive and an undeniable connection between man and machine.

The convenient system integrates with your car’s display screen to offer advanced lane guidance, a 3D interactive map, and can be controlled with voice commands.

pros
Dramatically different styling than soft-top MX5
Offers the security and quieter ride of a fixed-roof coupe
The electric folding roof does not reduce trunk space
cons
Lane departure warning is too aggressive
Seats have no lumbar, but good for a few hours of comfort at a time.
The tiny trunk will hold only a few items
